This full brown sheep leather tight-joint hollow tube binding had a split back hinge, leaving the back board completely detached. The board corners were also exposed and delaminating. Because of the nature of the damage to the back board, it was determined that the board would be reattached with joint tackets.

The book was first cleaned and the leather consolidated and lifted along the back board. A piece of medium-weight Japanese tissue was folded in a V-shape, with one half pasted onto the exposed spine, with the fold along the back shoulder. A piece of the same tissue was toned to match the endpapers and adhered to the back shoulder. Four equidistant holes were drilled through the back shoulder and toned tissue and four pairs of holes were drilled into the back board underneath the leather; thread was used through these holes to lace and reattach the back board to the text-block. Once the board was reattached, the spine was placed back down by pasting the rest of the V-shaped tissue, reforming the hollow tube, and the lifted leather on the back board was re-adhered. The toned tissue on the back endpapers was folded over and pasted down to the back board. A piece of toned tissue was used to repair the hinge; further toning was done to the hinge along the area of the label and the gold-tooled lines of the spine were extended onto the repair using shell gold. The board corners were mended with wheat starch paste and toned tissue.
